National parks of the world
Walking through the Park, we can hike to admire the icy splendor of the Northern nature. The Park stretches from the South to the North of Iceland. Vatnajökull covers an area of Vatnajökull glacier and the former national parks of Skaftafell and Seculauncher. By the standards of national parks, Vatnajökull, very young fleet, it was founded on 7 June 2008, but its area is 1/8 (12%) of all Iceland.
The main attraction of the Park Vatnajökull is the glacier of the same name (takes 8 % of its territory Iceland, only 8 133 km2). In terms of the Vatnajökull glacier is the largest in Europe, and the territory — the second (after Austfonna glacier in Svalbard), except for larger ice cap of the North island (New Earth, Russia), located in the extreme North-East of Europe.
The average ice thickness of 400 m, maximum 1000 m. the Highest point in Iceland, the peak of Hvannadalshnukur (110m 2), located on the southern edge of Pantaenus, near Skaftafell national Park. Under the glacier, as under many of the glaciers of Iceland, is home to several volcanoes. The volcanic lakes, Grímsvötn for example, were sources of major glacial flood in 1996. The volcano under these lakes also caused a considerable but short-time eruption in November 2004 over the last few years Vatnajökull gradually decreases, possibly due to climatic changes and recent volcanic activity. The glacier feeds several glacial lakes, such as Jökulsárlón and Granulon.
The Park also stands out the presence of glaciers, which originate inside of big chunks of ice and flowing, pulling blocks of ice. No region of the world there is no such combination of glaciers with geothermal energy and subglacial volcanic activity. In the languages of the Vatnajökull ice can reach a height of from 600 to 800 meters above sea level, and the Park scattered volcanic lake.
